Green Index
Toronto has a lot to be proud of with the newly released Green Index. Toronto ranked ninth in North America and second in Canada behind Vancouver.
Our strongest category is waste recycling, though we also did well in the categories of CO2, energy, buildings, water and air.
Where did we fall flat? Transportation. We have the worst commute of all the cities in the Green Index, including Los Angeles! Our commute time is 40 minutes versus the index average of 29 minutes.
The obvious solution is to move people towards public transportation, or better yet, walking and biking. However, many people live outside the city and – let’s be honest – who wants to give up the luxury of driving? You can listen to your radio, there are no wait times and you don’t have to fight for a seat. On the flip side, there is something nice about reading a book on your commute and not have to get annoyed with other drivers and traffic jams.
